CARE AND PRAYER

MEDIA
MISSISSIPPI BOULEVARD CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Dear Fellow Servant,

Is it just me or are merchandisers setting up the Christmas decorations earlier and earlier each year?  It used to be that Thanksgiving was the marker.  Now it appears that before the leaves hit the ground, there are aisles of lights, trees, gift wrap and “reindeer games”.  If you think the early start on Christmas advertising is for your good, you are mistaken.  It is clearly so that merchandisers have more time to make more money.  It is sad that the one day we have set aside as a holy day to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ has been wrapped in a bow and sold on the shelf to the highest bidder.  What’s sadder is that we, the public, fund this move away from Christ in Christmas.

If we fund it, we also have the power to change it.  What if we decided that this Christmas we were going to move in the other direction?  What if we made a stand and said this year we would honor the birth of Christ with a commitment to worship fully, spend less, give more, and love all including the least among us?  This is the premise of Advent Conspiracy which is an opportunity to declare to the world that God has given us the greatest Gift and that the Gift is at the center of our celebration.

I am asking each of you, as you prepare to fight the crowds at ungodly hours with lists of gifts to buy for people in your circle who may or may not appreciate what you are doing, to step back and consider paying it forward.

When we step back and beyond our circle to assist others who don’t have the resources necessary for healthy living, we move closer to fulfilling our duty as Christians.  Christ was rich but He became poor to love the poor, the forgotten, the overlooked and the sick.

This Sunday, November 15, we honor our veterans who have given of themselves to protect and serve this country.  Whether you are personally connected to a veteran or not you should come and celebrate the day with us and simply say “thank you” to any veteran you see along the way.

The following Sunday, November 23, is Hope Sunday.  We will recognize and support the work of Hope House Daycare, our feature charity for this year’s Holidays at THE BLVD concert.  To learn more about this wonderful organization please visit the website at www.hopehousedaycare.org.  Then come and share in this great story of love.

It’s time for us to take back the Christmas season and pay it forward with the love and joy that it was designed to hold.
